Hope-Follies refers to simple structures to be realized in order to meet the socialization needs of the residents of the Lower Varosha Area of Famagusta. The first work was carried out in the yard of Şehit Zeki Salih Primary School on the Telboyu axis, which forms the boundary between Varosha / Lower Varosha in the Closed Varosha Area of Famagusta. Since no public space arrangement had been made in this area, which has been urbanistically neglected for years, for children the school is much more than lessons, teachers, and notebooks.
The workshop took place in a short period of two days, and this schoolyard, which had almost no play equipment, was transformed into a playground by incorporating the school’s teachers, parents, and above all the excitement, wishes, and efforts of the primary school students.
Economic constraints also enabled parents to participate in the process with labor and material support. In addition to construction waste from Eastern Mediterranean University and used car tires collected from industry, materials from the surroundings such as the gravel stones in the yard, sand from the seaside, and the red soil excavated by the municipality from the plot opposite were also included in the production process. While an attempt was made to reveal what the garden of their dreams looked like through drawings made by the primary school students, university students also developed various ideas and models. The implementation proceeded through the synthesis of the ideas produced with the most economical use of the materials and labor at hand, and it was kept in a flexible structure open to development and change during the applications in the yard.
