Within the framework of Kale Design and Art Center (KTSM), a series of design workshops titled “Open Source: Perşembe Pazarı - Luminous Works” were conducted, and an exhibition bearing the same name was curated. The project brought together students and recent graduates from departments of architecture, interior architecture, and industrial design from 14 different universities. The process unfolded as an experimental and research-based mode of learning and production, spanning scales from the city to the building, and from material to object. The local craft network and skills of the area actively accompanied and informed this process.

“The Open Source: Perşembe Pazarı design workshop was conceived with an awareness of both the advantage and responsibility of being one of the first workshops of Kale Design and Art Center. It was structured around an approach that places Perşembe Pazarı, where KTSM itself is located, at its core. As a reflection of the workshop leader Aslı Kıyak İngin’s work and experience across multiple scales such as the city, architecture, and product design, the workshop encompassed a wide range of approaches, from urban and street scale to material, craft, and production scales. The experiences and relationships developed through the Made in Şişhane project, which İngin has been conducting since 2006, also formed the foundation of this workshop. ‘What can Perşembe Pazarı and its surroundings offer us and designers in all their openness? What (which detail, piece of knowledge, object, story, etc.) will we pursue? Where or what kind of production will our discoveries lead us to? How can we integrate into existing networks of relationships?’ These questions constituted the core inquiries of the workshop.”

The workshop was realized in two separate one-week sessions with selected students and recent graduates who applied through an open call. The luminous works produced as outcomes of the workshops were brought together, along with documentation of the workshop processes in the form of films, posters, photographs, and individual material libraries, and exhibited under the same title at KTSM’s exhibition space in Perşembe Pazarı between 21 December and 15 February 2020.

With its intensive one-week format, the design workshop first enabled participants to understand Perşembe Pazarı through its craft and trade networks, relationships, objects, and practices. Throughout the process, participants deepened their findings through experiments conducted alongside individual and collective walks, explorations, interviews, exchanges, and discussions. Following light, material, and spatial performance experiments, they finalized their works in collaboration with craft workshops. By deliberately avoiding the imposition of a specific theme or function, the workshop encouraged participants to think across multiple scales, city, street, object, and material, simultaneously. The close relationship established with Perşembe Pazarı, the workshop’s openness to hands-on experimentation, and its engagement with craft workshops fostered an alternative approach to design, production, and thinking. Beyond offering a practice of engaging with Perşembe Pazarı and its surroundings as a designer, the project aimed to collectively discuss, and even debate through making and producing, the present, future, and potentials of the area.
